Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access the site for the first time?

When your user account was created, you should have received an email containing your username; the email also explains how to register on the website. After completing the registration form (you will only be required to fill this form in on your first visit) and choosing your password, you will be taken through to the download page. You will then have the option to download 'All Files' or just your chosen format (eg fixed.dat) either compressed or full size.

How often should I download the file?

The Payments Council, the organisation that sets strategy for UK payments, advises regular users of sort code data to get their information from a product that's updated at least once every month and preferably each week.

Our data is updated both weekly and monthly - you choose - and we will send you notification when the latest file is available. We recommend you access the latest version as early as possible to ensure accuracy in your payments processing.

Your username and password gives you access to the site at any time and you may download the sorting codes file and the faster payments file as often as you require. The date of the last update will be apparent in the file name.

What do I do if I forget my password?

If you know your username, you can use the Forgot Password page to get a new password.

What format is the download available in?

Sorting Codes Electronic is available as a DAT file. These are general data files used by many programs; DAT files can usually be opened using any text editor application: There are four files containing the same data to ensure formats are suitable for your own in-house systems (eg. SAP, Oracle, Excel and Access.)

  • Fixed.dat: Contains fixed length records of 500 characters each. Each record is terminated with a Carriage Return/Line Feed.
  • Fix500.dat: Contains fixed length records of 500 characters each.
  • Varcrlf.dat: Contains variable length records. Each record is terminated with a Carriage Return/Line feed, and each field is delimited by a backslash '\'
  • Variable.dat: Contains variable length records. Each record is preceded by a 5 digit record length (includes the length of the 5 bytes). Each field is delimited by a backslash '\'

Our Faster Payments file is again available in four file formats.

How safe is it to download?

The site is protected by a HTTPS secure socket level of security.

What should I do if the download fails?

Firstly, try again. An internet connection failure may have affected the download. If you tried downloading the uncompressed version try downloading the zipped file. This is smaller and may be easier for your system to handle. You will then need to unzip the file once downloaded. If you are still unsuccessful contact the Technical Helpdesk.
